For hundreds of patients and their families every year, Rathbun House is a home away from home during a medical crisis. Mission Health’s very own hospitality house in western North Carolina, Rathbun House serves up to 36 families at any given time.
Guests of the home live outside Buncombe County and are typically family members of patients receiving hospital inpatient care, outpatient therapies or surgical procedures. Their loved ones typically are at Mission Hospital, CarePartners Rehabilitation Hospital, SECU Cancer Center or the VA Medical Center.
When the census is high for these facilities, the census is high for Rathbun, which has consistently been about 95 percent full throughout the past year. That in turn means a high demand for the food that is stocked in the Rathbun House pantry, which is generously donated from local churches, businesses, schools and food drives.

Each bin lists a telephone number to call when the bin is full; our volunteers are supporting the pick-up of food from the bins in Asheville. If you collect food at locations other than these, we welcome you to bring those donations to Rathbun at any time.
