On the Path of Recovery from COVID-19 and Other Illnesses

Therapist helping patientDid you know that COVID-19 symptoms can sometimes persist for months?

“The virus can affect the function of the lungs, heart and brain, which increases risk of long-term health problems,” said Mike Heilig, Physical Therapist and Program Director of CarePartners Outpatient Services. “Muscle weakness and fatigue are among the most common long-term symptoms. Swallowing or voice problems can also occur, especially for those who were intubated. Depending on your situation, it may be helpful to enlist the help of a rehabilitation professional, such as a physical therapist, occupational therapist or speech therapist. They can help assess your deficits and develop a program that will help you safely return to or even exceed your prior level of function.”

If you are recovering from COVID-19, or any other significant illness or hospitalization, be sure to ask your medical team when it is safe to resume physical activity. “The old adage of move it or lose it has truth to it,” said Heilig. “Gradual resumption of physical activity and progressive exercise can prevent, decrease and even reverse the long-term negative effects on overall function and quality of life.”

CarePartners offers a robust team of physical, occupational and speech therapists that are trained to help get you back to your most healthy self. Treatment services can help manage exhaustion, debilitation, pain and memory/concentration issues.
