You’re the Patient of a Top 15 Caregiver – What Does That Really Mean?

It was announced this week that Mission Health is once again among the Top 15 Health Systems, according to IBM Watson Health. We are humbled and honored to be among the nation’s best for the sixth time in the past seven years.

While we are extremely proud of the doctors, nurses and all caregivers at Mission Health, the impact on you – the patient – is far more important than any award.

So, what does this recognition really mean for you and your family, here in western North Carolina?

Top 15 Health Systems performed better than other health systems at the local, regional and national level.

Here’s how:

  • HIGHER SURVIVAL RATES – Top 15 Health System winners had 14.6 percent fewer in-hospital deaths.
  • FEWER COMPLICATIONS – Patients treated by a Top 15 Health System had significantly fewer complications than patients seen at other hospitals, with rates 17.3 percent lower than nonwinning peers.
  • SHORTER STAY – Patients returned home sooner, averaging about a half day shorter stay at the hospital.
  • LESS WAITING IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM – Patients spent less time in the emergency department when they were treated by Top 15 winners. Winning systems had, on average, 40 minutes shorter wait times for the ER.
  • BETTER PATIENT EXPERIENCE – When asked to rate their personal experience, patients rated the hospitals of Top 15 Health Systems higher than nonwinning peers. Top 15 winners had a 2.3 percent higher overall score. According to IBM Watson Health, this “tells us that patients treated by members of the top health systems reported a better overall hospital experience.”

So, how does IBM Watson Health determine their Top 15 Health Systems, exactly?

Here’s how:

To determine the Top 15 Health Systems, IBM Watson Health analyzed 338 health systems and 2,422 hospitals that are members of health systems using publicly available data. Their research is “based on clinical, operational, financial and patient perception-of-care measures.” Additionally, health systems do not apply for the selection process, and winners do not pay for their honor.
