So there’s the stroke, and then there’s life after having a stroke. Having a stroke is life-changing — for those who experience it and for the people in their lives. So, you or someone you know had a stroke. Now what? Rehab? Simple life changes? Maybe Stroke Camp?
A stroke, or an attack on the brain, is serious. We’re continuing our conversation about stroke health and awareness. In this episode, we welcome back Robin Jones, manager of the stroke program for Mission Health, to discuss the importance of stroke recovery and rehabilitation — including a stroke camp , which is Robin’s favorite camp, that is not to be missed. We also have one recent stroke survivor, Richard Welch, who is sharing his story and experience after unexpectedly experiencing a stroke. From being in the ambulance, to seeing the clot they removed from his brain, to having lunch with the multidisciplinary stroke team who cared for him after his stroke, he reflects on the life-saving and compassionate care he received across the entire continuum of care.
My Healthy Life Podcast: Episode 12 – I Had a Stroke. Now What?
In our last episode we talked about the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms of a stroke, and knowing what to do in the event of a stroke. While 65 percent of strokes occur in individuals over the age of 65, a stroke can happen to anyone so it’s important to know even the basics. Simply recognizing it could be life-saving (think FAST !). And always remember — the ambulance and EMTs are faster and more prepared than you may think, so call 911 in the event you believe you or someone you know is having a stroke.
But it’s not just about treating the stroke. After the stroke, it’s time to focus on healing and everyone’s healing process and road to recovery is different. That in mind, let’s discuss your options for care and what that healing journey may look like.
Mission Health is committed to being there for you and your loved ones before, during and after the stroke across the entire continuum of care. Whether you’re the stroke survivor, caregiver, friend, family member or loved one, there is a program or course of care for you.
