Carol Wolfenbarger: McDowell Hospital Unveils New Name and More

By Carol Wolfenbarger
President, McDowell Hospital

Happy New Year!

As I discussed in last month’s column, there is a lot in a name. Branding not only defines an institution, but also reflects its core values through logos, social media messaging, and other means. I’m excited to announce that as we begin the New Year, our hospital will be rolling out a new name and a renewed identity to ensure that our community gains full understanding of the compassionate, high quality healthcare they are accessing.

Our new name – Mission Hospital McDowell – reflects the legacy of our local community hospital while elevating our connectivity to the Mission Health system, named once again as one of the nation’s Top 15 Health Systems for its safe, high quality care and superb patient experience. This connectivity will help reinforce who we are as a provider of exceptional care right here in McDowell County!

Beyond that, the performance of McDowell Hospital has improved so much that it now rivals the best hospitals in the state. Recent recognitions include:

  • Designation as a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services 5-Star Hospital – just like Mission Hospital – and one of only ten such hospitals in the entire state;
  • Four consecutive “A” Safety ratings by The Leapfrog Group; and
  • A member of the only health system in the nation to Achieve Top 15 Health system recognition in five of the past six years.

The first official day for providing patient care in the new, state-of-the-art Mission Hospital McDowell will be February 23, 2018. In anticipation of that opening day, we will be busy educating our team of caregivers on the key patient flow processes, newly available technologies and detailed logistics of the move plan to ensure a successful transition. Our team is acutely mindful, however, that it is still a transition. To reduce risk, we will establish a command center to address any needs promptly should they arise, as well as invest in additional staffing to ensure that the most important element of the move – the patient – is kept at the forefront of this day.

In the coming months, we will also be rebranding some of our affiliated practices, and in the not-too-distant future, we anticipate that Asheville Cardiology Associates, Asheville Orthopedic Associates, and Carolina Spine will join us in Mission Health Center – McDowell.

We will continue to offer our community the same exceptional experts, skilled care teams, and array of services customized for our community, and we hope you will continue to entrust your care to us as we move into this exciting new phase in our history. Welcome to the new Mission Hospital McDowell!
